Valve included, or not: the one line that decides your installation
More failed bathroom installations start here than anywhere else. A shower set arrives, the box is opened, and there is a handle, a plate and a head — but no valve body. Nothing is faulty. The listing said “shower set” and meant the trim.
Trim versus valve
A shower has two halves. The valve body is the brass part that sits inside the wall, mixes hot and cold, and is plumbed in before the tiles go on. The trim is everything you see afterwards: the handle, the escutcheon plate, the head and the arm.
They are sold separately because they are replaced on completely different schedules. A valve body can stay in a wall for twenty years while trims are changed for cosmetic reasons. If you are refreshing a bathroom without opening the wall, trim-only is exactly what you want — and buying a full set would be a waste.
How to tell which you are buying
On this site the answer is in the product title: “valve included” or “valve not included”. We put it there deliberately, because a specification tab three scrolls down is not where that fact belongs.
Elsewhere, look for the words rough-in, valve body or cartridge in the included-items list. If the listing mentions only a finish and a spray pattern, assume trim-only and ask before ordering.
The question to ask before you buy
If the wall is closed, find out what valve is already in it. A trim is matched to a valve family, not universal, and a trim from one system will not sit on another manufacturer’s rough-in. If nobody knows what is in the wall — which is common in a rented or resold flat — that is a strong argument for opening the wall once and fitting a complete new set rather than guessing twice.
Timing matters more than price here
The cost of getting this wrong is rarely the part. It is the plumber’s second visit and the days a bathroom stays out of use. Confirm the valve question first, then choose the finish.
